Venezuelan media reports water supply is contaminated

Several Venezuelan governors have warned that oil spills and other contaminants may have polluted local drinking water. However, President Hugo Chavez claims these allegations are propaganda against him.

“If it isn’t war, it is media terrorism,” Chavez said in a CNN article March 22. “This is very serious. It is an attack on the physical and mental health of a people, of a community. This is a crime.”

An injunction, passed March 22, now requires media to present evidence when broadcasting information about pollution. The court order said that media’s claims should contain “truthful technical support backed by a competent institution,” according to a CNN article March 22. This concern stems from incidents when rumors about Venezuela’s water spread fear and ended up being untrue.

Venezuelan Attorney General Luisa Ortega Díaz announced approval for this measure, which aims to prevent slander from spreading fear among Venezuelans, and that her office would take action if there was evidence supporting the governors and media outlets’ claims against the water supply. #
